MEET BRIAN SCHMITT
What is the name of your business?
surefoot
in a nutshell, what is IT that you do for a living?
surefoot.me is an experienced team of strategists, UX designers, developers and data analysts who tap into the psyche of your customers and uncover what's preventing them from converting on your site or clicking on your email. We address customer pain points through strategic a/b tests and ux research, leading to happier customers and increased revenue. We don’t just report on collected data, but humanize it through storytelling and narrative. Revealing actionable insights that lead to organizational buy-in and a culture of data-informed decision making. We partner with clients in the eCommerce, SaaS, travel, political and media sectors.
What is your why? How did you get to where you are today?
We founded surefoot because we wanted to test a hypothesis (sorry, we can’t help ourselves). We were curious what would happen when we threw top talent, mission-driven clients and a people-first culture into a blender and turned it to 11. You see, we’ve spent our entire careers working for and with the giants, the Fortune 500’s, the big kahunas. And we’re darn thankful for it. Through those partnerships, we’ve learned a whole heckuva lot about strategy, communication, management, a/b testing and hey, even ourselves. But with each passing year, something began to nag at us. Slowly at first, until it became a familiar friend, constantly buzzing about our brains. What about the smaller guys and gals? The ones without the Super Bowl ads, million-dollar marketing budgets and big name reputations? The disruptors, innovators and trailblazers that have so much to offer yet so often go overlooked? Who do they turn to for testing support when they’re forced to pick between the Pinto and the Porsche? All too often we hear stories of them fading into the background, and that just doesn’t sit with us. So surefoot was born to serve the underdogs.
What are some challenges you've had to overcome while running (or starting) your business?
Saying no to so many good things, because they weren't our best thing. Many beautiful opportunities keep coming our way, but they don't help us become the company we set out to become. A company who is world class at crafting exceptional customer experiences.
What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone starting out on this Business Owner path?
Be persistent. Keep showing up. Keep learning. Keep getting better. Bit by bit. Every. Day. The small things compound, and when you look back they have turned into something much bigger.
What is your favorite life lesson?
I found this quote from Bruce Lee while I was in college and it's stuck with me, "A fight is not won by one punch or kick. Either learn to endure or hire a bodyguard." So many times life knocks the wind out of you. Get up. Keep going.
Why is 1909 important to you?
Hands down it's the community. So many diverse and interesting people, doing interesting things, who are willing to share and teach what they're doing. I learn so much from the people who make up 1909.
You're grabbing lunch in Downtown WPB - Where are you going and what are you getting?
Four favorites! Aioli for their cob salad. Field of Greens for their chicken caesar wrap (add walnuts for a great crunch!) , Paneterie for her quiche, and Rivales for their alberrito bowl.
If you could change one thing about West Palm Beach - what would it be? why?
First, I love how downtown WPB feels like a big city without being a big city. However, I do wish there were areas with a more organic, artistic, cultural mix. Where businesses in need of a space to try things could go to experiment and create without having to sign a three-year lease and sign all their assets away. I'm not talking about office space, but commercial space, warehouse space, mixed use space. Maybe it exist and I'm just not aware.
